The Opportunity

The battle for choice has unquestionably entered the political arena. Reproductive freedom is gravely threatened, a threat finally recognized and taken seriously by voters who used to believe abortion rights, once granted, would never be taken away. With each election, we have the opportunity to significantly alter the political landscape for reproductive rights in the United States. Each election also gives those trying to stop women from accessing family planning and abortion services the same opportunity.

Planned Parenthood of Santa Barbara, Ventura and San Luis Obispo Counties, Inc. is limited in the amount of money and staff time it can spend on lobbying and not permitted to undertake activities that will encourage the election of pro-choice candidates. We, therefore, formed the Planned Parenthood Action FUND of Santa Barbara, Ventura and San Luis Obispo Counties, Inc.

The Action FUND is a non-profit organization that encourages the passage of legislation that protects family planning and reproductive freedom; is actively involved in patient and community education; and promotes the election of pro-choice candidates. The Planned Parenthood Action FUND of Santa Barbara, Ventura and San Luis Obispo Counties, Inc. is a separately incorporated affiliated lobbying organization of Planned Parenthood of Santa Barbara, Ventura and San Luis Obispo Counties, Inc. Unlike the affiliate, however, the Action FUND is allowed to:

• Lobby without financial limitations.
• Identify voters who support pro-choice positions.
• Distribute information about candidates' positions on our issues.
• Endorse candidates.
• Conduct independent expenditure campaigns.
• Conduct get-out-the-vote drives.

Goals

The goals of the Planned Parenthood Action FUND of Santa Barbara, Ventura and San Luis Obispo Counties, Inc. support the three basic principles to which Planned Parenthood is dedicated:

• Every person has the fundamental right to manage his or her fertility regardless of income, marital status, age, national origin, ethnicity, or residence.
• Reproductive self-determination must be voluntary and preserve the individuals right to privacy.

Self-determination will contribute to enhancement of the quality of life, strong family relationships, and population stability.
